Food Aid
During the COVID 19 pandemic Equip has rapidly responded to the urgent needs of the communities with whom we work. Stringent lockdowns to keep people safe, have had the inevitable effect of preventing people from being able to earn their usual living. This has meant many have little or no food, resulting in significant numbers experiencing hunger.
Equip has mobilised the team in Kigali to provide food aid whenever possible to support struggling families and the most vulnerable in the immediate aftermath of lockdowns.
However, keen to ensure sustainable sources of food into the future, Equip has now embarked on several agricultural projects to provide longer term solutions.
Feeding Communities
Many of the Equip food aid distributions are facilitated through school communities. Teachers, able to identify those most in need, ensure that aid is given out fairly with the support of local leaders. Food is also distributed through all our other projects.
Providing Livestock
Giving livestock to those who are hungry enables them to have meat, milk and natural fertilizer for crops! They can also share and sell the surplus. Equip provides rabbits, goats and sheep dependent on the circumstances of the villagers and the suitability of the terrain. The Equip team check regularly on the progress of the animals to monitor the effectiveness of the projects.
Growing Crops
Equip is providing funds for the most vulnerable to rent land and plant crops so that they can grow their own food. Funds provide not only the land but seeds, tools and fertiliser. With support from Equip and local leaders, the recipients have formed small groups to be able to work together and maximise their efforts.
